Honourable Mention #14: Tame Impala - Innerspeaker

The sound of Innerspeaker, Tame Impala’s debut album, has been honed to a fine rock edge, through what I would assume was a long time spent digesting 60’s and 70’s rock pedigrees. Without coming across as another 70’s rock aping band—I’m looking at you Jet—Tame Impala have easily merged their fondness for psych-inflected rock and rock-inflected pop and made a beauty of a debut LP. The swirling guitar lines that you would expect on an album such as this are here, but are changed and subtly maneuvered so as to be less intrusive and, at the same time, appear to be the reason that the song exists.  It’s a strange split personality that these songs exhibit. They make no denial of their influences but wear them as a badge of honor rather than tread them under foot. Respect is really what we’re talking about here. And tracks like “Why Won’t You Make Up Your Mind?” and “Expectation” prove that by treating the source inspiration truthfully, and with respect, you can create music that harkens back to the naïve time before rock was diluted and absorbed into mainstream culture.
