No. 22 of 2010: Broken Social Scene - Forgiveness Rock Record
In a year full of high-profile releases that were unfairly targeted by backlash and fan dismissal, Broken Social Scene kept their heads down, stuck to their guns, and released Forgiveness Rock Record, a confident continuation of the work started with Feel Good Lost, pretty much perfected on You Forgot It In People, and carefully refined on their matured self-titled third album. Broken Social Scene songs have always been about subtext for me, and while superficially they are clearly speaking of one thing, under that facade a deeper more meaningful connection exists. And such is the case with many of the songs on Forgiveness Rock Record. Songs like the musically complex, "World Sick, with its misleading instrumental opening and closing and ecstatic crescendos, and "All To All", a beautiful synth-led track with vocals by the relatively new BSS'er Lisa Lobsinger command the listeners attention without seeming untoward or forceable aggresive, this is a record ostensibly about forgiveness after all. And with their usual carousel of guest musicians, this album has the same sprawling, yet still contained, feel of their past work. And despite what some people have said, this is Broken Social Scene through and through, no imitations or half-assed mockery, only a predictably unpredictable album from a band I've come to trust for their ability to assimilate so much of their own individual influences and still maintain a singular musical identity.
