No. 27 of 2010: Jonsi - Go
When an album can make you feel truly happy, you should hold onto that album for dear life. In this swirling, despair inducing world, music can move us beyond the everyday absurdities, bringing to the surface basic emotions and causing us to smile. Just a simple smile. Do you know how powerful that is? Or how rare a feeling? Go, the solo debut from Sigur Ros frontman Jonsi, is that powerful. Much like the richly emotive albums by his full-time band, Go can elicit these basic emotions, regardless of context and even simple language barriers. And while the lyrics may not all be life-affirming anthems for the down-hearted, it seems that the way in which he sings the lines and also the timbre of his voice convey more than the words themselves. The ascending joy of "Boy Lilikoi" or the churning, lilting "Animal Arithmetic" show us that Jonsi has that rare ability to distinguish honest emotion from the false, so often used, generic platitudes that mark the worst emotive bands. Go revels in its ability to evoke emotion but never feels slight in its depiction of those emotions which well so deep within us.
