Honourable Mention #3 - Superchunk: Majesty Shredding
I've come to realize that I have become very complacent with Superchunk and their releases. Yeah, they're consistently good but they don't seem to spur my attention like they should. I'd hate to think that I've just grown lazy in my listening habits, but it is a possibility. With the amount of music released, it seems that this might be a foregone conclusion. Whatever the reason, Majesty Shredding has gone a long way in lifting that complacency. You may think, "Oh, just another Superchunk release. Yeah, I'm sure it's good but I have a few of their records already and that should be enough." I know it's true, because that's a good summation of how I used to think. But listening to Majesty Shedding, you gain a deeper appreciation of the nuances that McCaughan and Ballance pull from these seemingly simple songs. Whether it's the ballad "Fractures in Plaster" or the propulsive pop of "Crossed Wires", these songs wind through the Superchunk canon and come out refreshed and sounding better than ever. They've been doing the same thing, well, for the last 20 odd years; there's something to said for that.
