Honourable Mention #10: Wavves - King Of The Beach

Okay, I know that Wavves may not be the most beloved band and that he has even managed to piss off quite a few of his fans. There has even been a bit of a backlash against the entire recent lo-fi genre.  But when his last album came out, people took notice.  It sounded different, and I’m not just talking about the fidelity. It took the idea of a badly recorded, though not bad, song and gave that very artifice its’ own place in a song; it became part of the inherent structure of the song. King of the Beach, his follow up, thankfully displays more diversity and—gasp—higher fidelity, at least whereWavves are concerned. The songs still revolve around the same general ideas of isolation and the inherent emotional collapse surrounding the perceived loss of oneself, and pot, but they’re been given a more pop oriented development. That being said, the songs still sound much like you think they would; with all of the talk about a more pop sound, Wavves are still clearly entrenched within the genre that they helped to resuscitate. And regardless of your opinion of the man himself, there’s little doubt that King of the Beach is a worthy follow-up and another step towards merging the seemingly disparate genres within which Wavves operate.
