No. 47 of 2010: Crystal Castles - Crystal Castles
How does a band, already somewhat vilified for touring mishaps, renew interest in their music and overcome any negative preconceptions on the part of new fans or general illwill from current fans? In the case of Crystal Castles, it's releasing a second self-titled album that completely reinstates the goodwill that was garnered at the onset of their career, or at least with the release of their debut album. The new album takes the electro freakouts and voice mainpulation of their first release and, like so many of their contemporaries, runs these noises through a melodic filter, coming out with something that is brighter and more pop but still loud enough for longtime fans not be pissed about. The first single, "Celectica", showcases the movement that Crystal Castles have made away from the indeterminant brashness of their debut, not necessarily a bad thing, and toward the structured, more so anyway for them, forms that seem to be the next logical step for this music. In coming to terms with what worked and was well-liked by fans off their first album, Crystal Castles have brought what was thought to be only a passing trend in music to a point where even the most skeptical of critics have a hard time denying its validity.
