Honourable Mention #12: Baths - Cerulean
Is "Chillwave" still a dirty word? I always thought it was a fairly meaningless label but it caught on and so it goes that I'm making mention of it here. Baths could very well be tied to that particular genre, if you were so inclined, but I'm afraid that by doing so, you'd assign it a possibly unintended stigma, at least in the minds of some people. The songs here weave together to construct concrete ideas and full-formed emotions, which is something that some like-minded bands flirt with, but ultimately are hard pressed to create. The hazy, trebly tendencies of bands like Washed Out or Neon Indian, bands which I do enjoy, are fleshed out with discernible progression and intent on Cerulean. Tracks like "Maximalist" and "Halls" possess a weight that is sometimes lost in electronic music. The songs steer clear of the lazy wanderings of many other songs characterized by chillwave and are focused without being too restrictive. Cerulean goes beyond conventional cold beats and synths to reach some warm inner core, allowing us to feel, as well as hear the music.
