This could easily have been just another decent mid-tempo indie pop release, very similar in fact to lead-singer Laura Burhenn’s previous duo Georgie James. And while there was nothing wrong necessarily with that band, it never sparked my interest in ways other bands, playing similar music, had. So, it comes as a bit of a surprise that on the debut album by The Mynabirds, we see her pull out her best Dusty Springfield impression. This sort of female country-soul aesthetic can easily be worn paper thin in a very short time if not done with the reverence and creativity befitting the early progenitors of that very music. And working within those traditional templates, Burhenn and producer Richard Swift wisely choose to downplay any overly theatric touches and allow the music and vocals to pass through to the listener undiluted and sounding as timeless as the classics which were so obviously an inspiration.
