No. 46 of 2010: The Drive-By Truckers - The Big To Do

After the lackluster outing with A Blessing and A Curse, it seemed that The Drive-By Truckers had run into a bit of a dead-end creatively.  This was also driven home by the departure of Jason Isbell, one of the driving forces behind the Truckers. But with Brighter Than Creations Dark, they pulled themselves out of that funk and delivered one of their most interesting and diverse records to date. Following on that albums heels comes The Big To-Do, which finds The Drive-By Truckers favoring the leanings of their earlier records as opposed to the mid-life platitudes which were found on A Blessing and A Curse and which were thankfully mostly absent on BTCD. Songs like "Daddy Learned To Fly", "Drag The Lake Charlie", and "This Fucking Job" play with the two ends of the Truckers ideals, that the gothic and macabre can peacefully, or maybe not so peacefully, co-exist with the smart-ass countryboy personas that were the dominant characters of their first few albums. The Big To-Do shows The Drive-By Truckers growing older but losing none of their southern wit and fretwork. And I still think Patterson Hood could kick my ass.
