Honourable Mention #2 - Spoon: Transference
With every subsequent Spoon release, we see the undulations of an evolving rock band. I remember picking up a copy of A Series of Sneaks years ago and having a hard time, at least initially, getting into it. But it finally caught on and it wound up being one of my favourite albums of that year. On the albums following A Series of Sneaks, on through 07's Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, the songs have generally been instantly memorable, hooks you could hang the moon on and enough depth and talent to court weeks worth of listening time. But when I first listened to Transference, the same feeling I got when I first listened to A Series of Sneaks reared its ugly head. It was good, no doubt about that. But why wasn't it grabbing me and keeping my attention, like Ga x5 or Kill the Moonlight. However, I told myself, "Give it time, if it's acting like A Series of Sneaks, then it may unfold in the same way." And it did, slower than I'm used to for a Spoon record, but it did. The songs, which at first listen may give the impression of a band running in place, are surprising and create memorable moments throughout the album. I think that beneath the easily identifiable indie signifers, or for that matter Spoon archetypes, a beauty of an album exists. Transference may not have the immediate earworms that Girls Can Tell or Kill The Moonlight had but once this album gets its hooks into you, it's going to stay with you for some time.
