Honourable Mention #6: Women - Public Strain

It’s a mistake, I feel, to lump Women in with the current wave of lo-fi trenders.  And while that statement is neither intended as an insult to current lo-fi practitioners, nor as a comprehensive declaration on the musical leanings of Women, it can be read as a general statement of intent concerning a band that straddles the line between lo-fi hiss-takes and post-rock theatrics.  With the martial production by Chad VanGaalen, Public Strain seems to reach deeper into the collective hive mind of the members of Women, eschewing traditional song structures and vocal inflections in favor of ethereal vocals and fractured song fragments, which, through the creative determination of these guys, transcends labels and becomes a unique method unto itself.  Owing more than a little to art-rock noise makers, like The Velvet Underground or Sonic Youth, the resultant album successfully treads the line between the sort of broken guitar rock that VU were known for and the feedback saturated pop of Sonic Youth.
