No. 15 of 2010: Beach House - Teen Dream

Since their self-titled debut came out in 2006, Beach House have been layering their hypnotic glacial rock rhythms over mesmerizing low-key vocals effortlessly. And their debut was confident and self-assured like no other album that year; it was the sound of a band coming together in the studio, with no walls, no barriers between them and the music.  And their second album Devotion, kept the highlights coming and made sure that the refinement of their sound was the first and foremost priority in the songs. Teen Dream came out early in 2010 and set a high par for this style of meditative indie rock. The songs are more focused and lyrically darker than on previous albums.  And although the songs initially appear sunnier and poppier than on previous releases, like the best of pop music through the years, a sugary coating can contain bitter ideas and Teen Dream is no exception. Songs like the deceptively simplistic "Walk In The Park" and the dream-pop-fixated "Norway" lend Teen Dream a relevance and a connection to the ideals of music created in the last 40 years that stands up against all other similar bands that carry the torch of pop music.
