No. 48 of 2010: The Radio Dept - Clinging To A Scheme
There's something very nostalgic about clean, precise pop. Not sure what it is, but it reminds me of a time when I first heard bands like The Go-Betweens or Cocteau Twins. And every year or so, there is an album that solidifies the relevance of this type of music within the independent community. Clinging To A Scheme, the latest album by The Radio Dept, is that record for 2010. With songs that the formerly mentioned bands would have envied, The Radio Dept have crafted a perfect example of an album that hews closely to finely honed pop brands, while also carving their own distinctive niche within that same genre. "Heaven's On Fire" with its bright, I-guess-you-could-qualify-it-as-Balearic, atmosphere stands out among a host of great songs. The Radio Dept have released far fewer albums than their measured sound would tend to indicate and, only three full-lengths in, they've pretty much managed to set the bar for this kind of beautiful, still-life pop.
